Sheung Shui was once entirely a farming village, and although the agricultural industry has declined in recent decades, young people across Hong Kong are rediscovering and promoting farming. 鄉土學社 Society of Indigenous Learning (SOIL) is an education group and community farm, that has been practicing and teaching sustainable agriculture since 2013. Through the model of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), SoIL is part of a larger network of volunteers and nearby residents, other community farms such as Mapopo, local shops and NGOs, TouYau (along the route!) and TinYeah!.

Recently the community farm Mapopo in Mashipo is in the process of relocating to SoIL, as their land in Mashipo village will be affected by the Fanling North New Development Area (NDA). The case of Mapopo has been contested for many years and widely featured in the media. SoIL is not directly affected by the NDA at this stage, as it is outside of the planning boundary.

Because of the relocation process, SoIL is not running a lot of workshops these days -- but feel free to have a look at the farm and say hi to the friendly farmer team!
