Sheung Shui might seem like a sleepy suburb, but it is actually teeming with tensions and surprising contradictions arising from the tremendous and incredibly rapid development that did and will continue to shape the area. Traveling from malls to wild cows, old hidden shrines to new hidden coffee shops, old wetlands to young farmers, we invite you to explore the different sides of Sheung Shui on this? Walk!

START!

From Sheung Shui MTR, go out of Exit A3 and take the bike path westward to Po shek Wu Road.

Follow straight ahead along Po Shek Wu Road.

Take the underpass toward Sheung Shui Wai.

Sheung Shui Wai

The oldest and largest village in the area, with a lot of heritage and a vibrant cafe!

Follow the road through the village...

Liu Man Shek Tong

Liu Man Shek Tong, located between the Mun Hau Tsuen and Chung Sum Tsuen inside Sheung Shui Heung, is the largest ancestral hall of the Liu clan settled in Sheung Shui.

Return to the road, and follow it on until you spot this road to the left. Follow it up the stairs to ATMA.

ATMA Cafe

This is the home of nobody, but a communal space called ATMA, a coffee shop, a place to gather people, and more.

Turn left, and follow this road as it twists slightly right

Follow this road straight ahead for quite a while, until you reach its end by the waste management building. Right before the end of the road, turn right here:

Cross the parking lot and follow the path on the left to the bridge across the river

The path is near the construction site​, be careful!

Fu Tei Au Tsuen

Many historical heritages are hidden in this small village. In order to strive against the demolition in the new development plan, villagers hope to share and promote their historical sites with you as a way to preserve the village.

Fu Dei Aau Tsuen

First, walk to the junction to the stone tablet. Then turn right and walk until you almost reach the end of the road, to find the treehouse.

Lu Zu Temple and stone tablet

Located alongside the Ng Tung River, the village has a strong connection to the river not only geographically but also culturally...

Treehouse

The “treehouse” is called as "tree in the air", it was an accidental combination of nature and artificial architecture

Go back the same way and continue in between a few houses to find the well.

Please ask one of the locals in the area to give you leave to enter and clear directions.

Colorful well

A hundred-year-old well is located inside the village, It witnessed the construction process of the Kowloon Canton Railway...But why is it called colorful well?

Return to the path, follow it up to the road and back to the other entrance of the village

There might be village dogs at this entrance. Be careful! It would be nice to ask villagers to lead you in.

KCR Bricks and manufacture 

The team of the Kowloon Canton Railway has set up the quarry and brick factory in the village.

Follow the road back to the river

Turn left and walk along the river~

Ng Tung River

Ng Tung River has a complex ancient and recent history, and was perhaps the reason for the very first settlement in the area...

You have reached the end of the tour. Now it's your choice how to walk back to the city!

Turn right and cross the bridge to follow the big road straight back to the city. 

Not recommended cycling for bicycle beginners. 

Expected time for walking 35mins

Expected time for cycling 20mins

Follow the river to the next bridge. Nice to bike and walk, but twice the distance.
